HATTERAS KIWANIS CLUB DEVELOPS COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS TO FIGHT LITTER

The Kiwanis Club of Hatteras Island has a long history of supporting school and community programs. In addition to raising funds for two annual scholarships and an array of service projects, the group has recently embarked on a campaign to beautify the environment by fighting litter.
“Some time ago, one
of our members suggested that our group consider a campaign to deal with
litter,” said Carl Bornfiend, committee chairperson. “We know it’s important
for our children to grow up in a clean, healthy environment, and as we looked
around our island, we realized that some areas could use help in dealing with
litter problems. We realized also that solutions wouldn‘t be quick or easy.”
With the idea of no “quick fix,” the group designed an anti-litter campaign with several approaches. A meeting was held with a number of Avon business owners to discuss possible strategies for reducing litter in an area with special traffic problems. Contacts are being made with other business owners to discuss the situation. Signs thanking individuals for not littering have been designed and will be posted throughout the island by business partners. A number of realtors have also agreed to put magnets displaying the same message in rental housing.
“We expect our number of partners to grow as we move forward with the project,” said Sam Hagedon, Kiwanis member. “Every time another business or individual joins us, our efforts are magnified dramatically.”
